What is the theta notation ?
Theta notation is the oldest notation used by Stoudites for the chant book sticherarion until the 11th century and very close to ekphonetic notation, it was often replaced with Chartres notation during the 11th century, since the Chartres types were—roughly spoken—Constantinopolitan, while notators at Mar Saba and at St Catherine's Monastery at Sinai rather used Coislin types.
I checked more carefully and this book here does not need such a notation, but the scribe had a very particular style to write the diacritics which is in itself a useful notation, since there are plenty of incipits which point at the avtomela or heirmoi. Hence the book could be easily used by a singer who knew these models well by heart. By the way this kind of "notation" was also used by Piyyutim of the Orient and Andalusia as well as by Hafizes.
The type of the book is very interesting, it is something in between the old book Tropologion, the Heirmologion (which could be used additionally, if it was a short version just with the notated heirmoi), and the Parakletike or Great Oktoechos, and very close to Old Church Slavonic Oktoich, but not as voluminous, rather an Irmolog. Its title says it has only those kanones dedicated to the mother of God (Theotokos).
