  • There are several problems here. You could not find any trace of this in Chantdiscography.com because of an oversight. I identified the 78 version of these chants as 23 to 25 because Period (and the Everest reissue) omitted 26 from one side of Period SPL 569 and Everest 3402. But Studio S.M. seemed to include 23 to 26 on their CD 12 16.34. However, as Alberto pointed out, Rorate on CD is not Rorate on 78=SSM 26. There can be no doubt about this. Alberto has collected every sort of chant recording, while in the last 40 years I have had to be satisfied with listening to most of my sources in libraries, often only a single time (as at BnF).

But, as a search of "LU 1868b" will show, there is no known original recording that matches the format (v.2,3,4 only, with organ), neither on Studio S.M. or on any other label. There is not even a complete v.1-4 with organ that might have been truncated.

Studio S.M. has a history of failing to keep (or at least to publish) recording sheets identifying and dating their recordings accurately, and of sometimes reissuing their tapes in nondescript order without much reference to their original format. An example will suffice: Maurice Robreau once wrote in a reissue package that in the early years, when he focused on Cistercian abbeys, he habitually recorded Salve Regina mater (WA -5-) in every session. There is no way of telling how often these tapes were swapped with the oldest one (the Grand Prix du Disque winner of 1949) without notice. In 1990 Bricquebec was informed that royalties due to them had been paid to other Cistercian abbeys through poor record keeping. Remember, the earliest recordings were labeled only "Trappist monks." All this is probably the biggest problem in chant discography.

    https://gregorian-chant.ning.com/group/enregistrements/forum/topics/...
