How are psalm tones performed?

Based on what I read by John Blackley and Dom Gregory Murray, all syllables with one note of the psalm tones are long and when there are syllables with more pitches, the notes are usually short. But are the long notes supposed to have the same duration? I mean, I notice that texts sung that way tend to drag and sound boring if the verse is long. Is there something I'm missing?

  • Thanks for the answer. I think my "dragging" problem could be solved with some rubato.

Didn't know about how it was sung during the office.
