Hello!

Please allow me to introduce myself: I am the Team Lead of the Cantorales in the Americas and Beyond project. Richard Haefer, David Andrés Fernández, Martha E. Thomae Elías, and Jane Morlet Hardie, and I are collaborating with the Digital Analysis of Chant Transmission project, funded by SSHRC.

We invite your help. The aim of the Cantorales in the Americas and Beyond (CAB) research project is to catalog manuscripts of plainchant outside of Europe that were produced in the Iberian Peninsula and across the Spanish diaspora between 1300 and 1800, with a principal focus on the Americas. As you may know, plainchant was the monophonic music of medieval liturgy. These cantorales are often large books with musical notation used for both the Mass and for the Daily Office. The goal in collecting information on Iberian manuscripts, is to contribute metadata to Cantus Database, which features sources of ecclesiastical chant in manuscript and early modern books. While many northern European manuscripts are included, very few Iberian sources have been. Our work is to share metadata about sources with researchers. We also seek to understand, as part of the Digital Analysis of Chant Transmission (DACT) initiative, where these manuscripts traveled and how they were used, both during the colonial period and after.

Important data can be found in print catalogues, digital catalogues, digitization projects, and auction catalogues. We are launching a crowd-sourcing initiative to help us collect information about uncatalogued or unknown manuscripts in libraries, archives, and institutions. We also welcome information on chant fragments, but please note that our work is focused on manuscripts (and not printed materials).

Our collection method via google sheets allows you to provide basic information about manuscripts in your collections or ones you know about. QR codes for both Spanish and English versions are available below. I will also post a flyer you can share with colleagues.

We hope you will participate in this important initiative, which seeks to acknowledge the cultural value of these artifacts. Questions can be directed to cantoralesintheamericas@gmail.com or to Dr. Virginia Blanton, University of Missouri-Kansas City, blantonv@umkc.edu.

I would be very grateful if you could share this information!

Best wishes,
Virginia
