Music and music culture in 15th-century Bohemia in a broader European context.

Conditions and additional position specifications

The doctoral position is sponsored by the project of the Czech Science Foundation (GAČR) EXPRO 19-28306X (Old Myths, New Facts: Czech Lands in Centre of 15thCentury Music Developments). The successful candidate is expected to be fully involved in the research program (detailed information about the 5-year project is available on the website www.smnf.cz/en/). The doctoral student will conduct an independent dissertation project in close collaboration with the project team, attend regular team meetings, and participate actively in all research activities organised by the project: e.g., lectures, workshops, colloquias / conferences, etc.

Dissertation project proposals in the following topics are particularly welcome:

  •   Latin monophonic chant in the late Middle Ages in Central Europe,

  •   Czech vernacular liturgy in the 15th century,

  •   Music and Liturgy in late medieval monasteries,

  •   Czech religious song,

  •   Polyphony in sources of Czech and Central-European origin in the 15th 16th

    centuries.

Requirements

The candidate is a PhD student enrolled in doctoral studies at a University in the Czech Republic or abroad on the start date of the position (1. 4. 2020 or 1. 10. 2020, respectively). The candidate has advanced knowledge of English or German and has at least elementary knowledge of Latin and medieval music palaeography.

The Masaryk Institute and Archive of the CAS is a medium-size institution within the Czech Academy of Sciences system. Its research profile includes modern history, history of science, political studies, literary and music history; the Department for the Cataloguing and Study of Manuscripts is housed within the institute.

The Institute provides all necessary conditions for the research. It is expected that the successful candidate will live in Prague. The institute can, if needed, assist in finding housing for candidates from abroad or Czech candidates from other cities.

  1. Project proposal (ca 5 pages including bibliography).

  2. Curriculum vitae with publications list.

  3. Cover letter.
