During the last months another Heirmologion and two kalophonic manuscripts (an incomplete Menaion of the a Sticherarion kalophonikon and a fragment of a Mathematarion) of the British Library have been published on the pages of "Digitised Manuscripts". Here my description:

Add MS 39611

End of echos tetartos and beginning of plagios devteros (folio 57r)

XVII • Heirmologion mostly in canon order (KaO) written near Sainte Catherine's monastery. The first part of echos protos is missing, but the rest is complete, just the order is odd and probably caused by a modal re-arrangement of the old heirmologion, look at various modal signatures used to classify just one of certain odes.

  • Echos devteros ff. 2r-25r.
  • Echos tritos and tetartos triphonon ff. 25r-38r.
  • Echos tetartos (including eso forms) and echos devteros and mesos devteros ff. 38v-57r.
  • Echos plagios devteros (including echos devteros and mesos devteros) ff. 57r-64v.
  • Echos plagios protos (also echos devteros and mesos devteros)  ff. 64v- 78r.
  • Echos varys ff. 78r-87r.
  • Echos plagios tetartos (including echos tetartos and tetartos eso) ff. 87r-110v.

Origin: Eastern Mediterranean (?Sinai).

Provenance: Manuscript loaned by Agathangelus, protosyncellus of the Monastery of St Catherine on Mount Sinai to Michael Manoli, Epitropus of the Sinai monks at Suez, in 1820: ownership inscription, f 1v: τὸ παρὸν εἰρμολόγειον εἴναι ἀπὸ τὴν βιβληωθήκην τοῦ ἁγίου καὶ θεοβαδίστου ὄρους Σινᾶ· ἀπὸ τὴν βιβληωθείκην τὴς παναγίας τὴν λεγομένην του δεσπότη· καὶ στέλνετε δι αδείας τῆς ϊερᾶς συνάξεως εἰς τὸν ἑν σουβείσυ ἐπιτροπών μας, κὺρ Μιχαῆλ Μανόλη καὶ ὤσον τοῦ εἴναι ἀναγγέων να τὸ ἔχει εἰς χρίσην ἑδικήν του ας τὸ ἔχει· καὶ μεταῦτα νὰ τὸ στύλνη πάλαι εἰς τὸ μοναστήριον δίχος να μένη εἰς δεύτερον πρόσοπον: 1820. νοεμβρίου. 24 -ὄρος Σινᾶ Ἀγαθάγγελος πρωτοσύγγελος δικ(ανικὸς?) καὶ ἡ σύναξις τῶν πατέρων.Presented to Robert Curzon by the Vice-Consul at Suez in 1834: ownership inscription, f i recto. (added by a later hand on folio 465r)

XVII-XVIII (recycling portions of old sticheraria written during the 15th century) • Sticherarion kalophonikon for the use at the Patriarchate of Jerusalem (emphasis on Patriarch Sophronios as a holy megalomartyre) with kalophonic settings of the Menaion, about stichera of the Holy Week (Triodion) and for Pentecost. It also has some pages of two old sticheraria (probably dating back to the 15th century) around Epiphany (Menaion), from the Holy Week (Triodion), and the stichera heothina (Oktoechos). There are as well sections with kalophonic settings of Theotokia, including one Heirmos kalophonikos, of psalm verses (ff. 95-106) and a short collection kratemata (ff. 69-79), which is in itself a Mathematarion. A complete Menaion cycle (with a small collection of stichera kalophonika and especially anagrammatismoi of selected stichera, the November collection is longer than any other one, not always in the calendaric order due to many later additions) starts again with September on folio 107 recto. The whole manuscript has many blank pages between various sections which were obviously left for later additions. Not all of these pages were filled (and pages left blank were not foliated, just numbered a, b, c etc. according to the last folio number with written content, so that the book has in fact about 500 folios or 1000 pages!), but the book is full of additions in various ink colours and written by various hands, obviously added during later centuries until the 19th, but always notated with middle Byzantine notation. The main scribe had not a very elegant and careful hand, text and neumes are often hard to read. Many later scribes just used black ink without adding any red ink in a second step (often leaving aside the majuscules and writing great signs in black).

The book opens with the kalophonic settings of idiomela for the hours of Christmas Vigil SAV 329 πλδ᾽ and ends with an anagrammatismos about the last section of SAV 740 πλβ᾽, the latest number is SAV 748 πλδ᾽ νανὰ in a kalophonic arrangement by Manuel Chrysaphes, Lampadarios of the Palatine chapel, ff. 459r-461v, both stichera for the Decollation of John the Baptist (28 August). As usual for the genre, most composers are late Byzantine as Ioannes Glykys, Ioannes Koukouzeles, Ioannes Kladas, Xenos Korones, Manuel Chrysaphes, Gregorios Mpounes Alyates etc.

  • Fragment of a Menaion kalophonikon with Christmas stichera ff. 1r-17r; January (ff. 17v-19r) kalophonic sticheron about SAV 423 πλβ᾽ for Epiphany Hours (empty folios between ff. 19v-20v).
  • Old sticherarion (Menaion of January) with stichera SAV 412-423 and bleached out red majuscules (ff. 21r-28v).
  • Another old sticherarion of the mobile cycle (around Good Friday) together with the stichera heothina from the Oktoechos book:  another hand (ff. 29r-48v) offers stichera rubrified by a later hand with red ink "dedicated to Patriarch Sophronius of Jerusalem" (11 March, not present in SAV, but all of them are actually known from the Holy Week portion, so probably a part of triodion was recycled here); eleven stichera heothina ff. 36r-45v; two kalophonic settings about two other idiomela of the Holy Week.
  • Mathematarion (kalophonic settings of theotokia by Manuel Chrysaphes ff. 49r-59r; idiomela for Pentecost and heirmos kalophonikos τὴν πᾶσαν ἐλπίδα μου 59v-68v; Kratematarion with prologoi and kratemata by Gregorios Mpounes Alyates, Manuel Chrysaphes and Xenos Korones ff. 69r-79v; kalophonic settings of theotokia, katanyktika, funeral and other hymns ff. 80r-94v; psalm, pasapnoaria and polyeleos settings by Ioannes Koukouzeles, Xenos Korones and Gregorios Mpounes Alyates ff. 95r-106v).
  • Menaion kalophonikon: September (SAV 39) ff. 107r-115r; October ff. 116r-138r; November (finishes with SAV 198 & anagrammatismos, then SAV 185, 210 etc. anagrammatismoi about SAV 219 and 214, followed by the first and second section, and second section of SAV 238, anagrammatismos of SAV 243, SAV 257 & 258, 254) ff. 139r-200r; December (SAV 267-troparion Ἰωσὴφ εἴπε ἡμῖν of the third Christmas hour; kalophonic setting of the first ode of the Christmas kanon ff. 224r-225v) ff. 201r-241v; January (SAV 400-451; owner change written on the blank pages foliated as 238; anagrammatismos Ὁ αἴρων τὴν ἀμαρτίαν by Ioannes Koukouzeles about SAV 414 has been torn out ff. 242-243; the sticheron kalophonikon καὶ θεῖα μελετὴν νόμου, second part of SAV 400 is present in two realisations in echos plagios tetartos, f. 244, and in echos tetartos by Manuel Chrysaphes, author name corrected by a pencil, probably it is by Ioannes Koukouzeles, ff. 247r-248v; two odes of the heirmos for Epiphany in echos devteros ff. 254r-257v) ff. 235r-259v; February (SAV 524-536?) ff. 260r-269v; March (Megalynarion εὐαγγελίζου, γῇ, χαρὰν μεγάλην in echos tetartos by Ioannes Koukouzeles ff. 283v-285r and Manuel Chrysaphes ff. 287v-288r, SAV 552) ff. 283v-288r; April (SAV 561-565) ff. 337r-350r; May (8: John the Theologian sticheron Ποταμοὶ θεολογίας in echos protos in three sections by Ioannes Glykys ff. 351r-355r; sticheron Ἀναπεσὼν ἐν τῷ στήθει in echos tetartos by Manuel Chrysaphes and Ioannes Koukouzeles ff. 355v-357v & 359v-361r; sticheron Εὐαγγελιστὰ Ἰωάννη, Ἰσάγγελε παρθένε in echos plagios tetartos, first section by Ioannes Glykys, second by Ioannes Koukouzeles ff. 358r-359v; sticheron kalophonikon Ὡς ἀστὴρ πολύφωτος in echos devteros by Manuel Chrysaphes ff. 362r-364r; sticheron Χριστὲ γὰρ ἆρον ἐπόθησα ff. 365r-367r; sticheron ἀλλώθειων ff. 367r-369v; sticheron Τότε παραλαμβάνει αὐτὸν ὁ διάβολος (Matth 4:5) ff. 369v-370r; 21: SAV 580 anagrammatismos Κωνσταντῖνει σ' ἀπόστολε σὺν μητρί θεόφονι in echos plagios tetartos ff. 370r-372r; 24: SAV 583 sticheron Πάτερ ἀξιάγαστε τῆς ἐρήμου in echos plagios devteros ff. 382v-385r) ff. 351r-372r & 382v-385r; June (8: kalophonic setting of SAV 585 ff. 269v-271r; 24: kalophonic setting of SAV 611 by Manuel Chrysaphes ff. 271v-273v; 11: Barnabas & Bartholomew sticheron ἐγὼ σήμερον γεγέννηκά σε [no modal signature!] by Vasile Konstantinou ff. 372v-374v; 24: SAV 608 Τὸν ἐν προφήταις ὄρον, καὶ ἀρχὴν ἀπόστολων in echos plagios protos, sticheron kalophonikon about the second section in echos protos with phthora nenano and prologos about the first section by Manuel Chrysaphes ff. 388r-393v, anagrammatismos about SAV 614; kalophonic setting of SAV 613 νεάγιε νανὰ by Ioannes Domestikos ff. 401r-402v; 30: kalophonic setting Τοὺς μαθητάς τοῦ σωτηρὸς καὶ ἀποστολοῖς in echos plagios tetartos by Manuel Chrysaphes ff. 403r-405r; 29: anagrammatismoi about SAV 628 & 624 by Ioannes Koukouzeles ff. 405v-410r; ) ff. 269v-273v, 372r-374v, 388r-396r & 401r-410r; July (11: anagrammatismos Αὐτῆς ταῖς ἱκεσίαις κατάπεμψον ἡμῖν about the doxastikon Ἐκ δεξιῶν τοῦ Σωτῆρος in echos plagios devteros ff. 411r-412v; 27: kalophonic setting of Ἡ παμφαὴς τοῦ μάρτυρος μνήμη in echos plagios protos in three sections by Ioannes Glykys ff. 413r-417r; kalophonic setting of SAV 686 & 690 by Manuel Chrysaphes ff. 418r-423v) ff. 411r-423; August (6: kalophonic setting & anagrammatismos about SAV 712 by Manuel Chrysaphes ff.425r-431r; kalophonic setting for the choir & anagrammatismoi Ἄγγελοι διηκόνουν φόβῳ καὶ τρόμῳ by Manuel Chrysaphes and οὐρανοὶ ἔφριξαν, γῆ ἐτρόμαξεν by Ioannes Koukouzeles about SAV 710 ff. 431v-436v & 440r-441v; SAV 706 in echos tetartos [without modal signature] ff. 437r-439v; 15: anagrammatismoi Καὶ σὺν αὐτῇ πληροῦται , Χαῖρε κεχαριτωμένη, Παρθένε Μήτηρ & Ἀλλ' ὦ παρθένε ἄχραντε, ἱκέτευε ἐκτενῶς about SAV 716, 725 & 727 by Ioannes Koukouzeles ff. 441v-447v; kalophonic setting of SAV 719 ff. 447v-450v; anagrammatismos ᾦ παρθένε ὁρῷ σε τρανῶς ἡπλωμένην about SAV 727 by Manuel Chrysaphes ff. 451r-454r; kalophonic setting of the theotokion ἄνετα γηγενεῖς σκηρτά in echos tetartos ff. 455r-456v; 29: kaliphonic setting of SAV 740 & 748 by Manuel Chrysaphes ff. 457r-461v; anagrammatismoi about SAV 747 Πρεσβεῖαις τοῦ σου προδρόμου, κύριε in echos kratema nenano by Manuel Chrysaphes and ᾮ ὄρχημα δόλιον, καὶ πότος μετά δόλου! in echos plagios devteros by Ioannes Koukouzeles ff. 462r-464v; anagrammatismos about SAV 740 πλβ᾽ by Xenos Korones ff. 465r-466v) ff. 425r-466v.

  • I improved the detailed description of the sticherarion kalophonikon which is quite messed up, since it combines not only stichera of the menaion, but also those of the mobile cycle (Triodion and Pentekostarion), and even of the Great Oktoechos or Parakletike (the long weekday version of the book Oktoechos). This work was quite useful for me, since I described a Menaion of the Sticherarion kalophonikon at the Berlin state library which has even 1900 pages! In comparison this manuscript has a smaller portions of the repertoire, but probably one which is more likely to be really performed during ceremonies of Easter and other more important feasts, when a big crowd might offer opportunities for singers to perform chant in such long and elaborated versions.

    Cher Dominque
