Chant ensemble sizes and use of boys

I would very much like to KNOW more exactly, on which liturgical occasions and in which places larger chant ensembles and boys voices were used: What evidence and from what times do we actually have for this? From what I have read it seems that there was a broad range of chant ensemble sizes and types - from only 7 men to very large ensembles with or without boys, sometimes ONLY boys seem to have sung, sometimes in alternation with men, at other times all together. I would like to have an article or book which collects ALL the known evidence, on which occasions exactly and in which places these different sizes/combinations of voices were (probably) used. It seems probable to me that the size as well as the combination of voices of chant ensembles often depended on the liturgical occasion, the place and time.

It would be great to have recordings which try to reflect the evidence which we have on this.
