Lost Chant of the Mozarabic Rite Restored by Computer:

Service, Book & CD

Gregoriana Amsterdam will perform a fictitious service from the lost Mozarabic Rite. Afterwards the book "Calculemus et Cantemus" will be presented. The book offers 50 computationally restored chants of the lost Mozarabic Rite with introductory articles by international experts and an Audio CD with an anthology of the restored chants.

The Mozarabic Rite existed on the Iberian Peninsula and Southern France from the sixth till eleventh century. In 1085 it was officially abolished in favour of the Roman Rite. The chant was replaced by Gregorian Chant. Over 5000 chants of the Mozarabic Rite have been preserved in unheightened medieval neumatic notation. Only a few of these chants were found in pitch readable notation. The vast majority of Mozarabic Chants therefore seems irretrievably lost. One of the great tragedies of medieval music history.

    It is not up for me to decide, I am afraid, but I would never burn anybody for something like this :D

    In my eyes you tried to be honest, just the word "fictitious service" was not very clear.

    The format of our service does not agree in all detail to any modern or historical format. That's all. I think that's not enough to make me a heretic.

    I think I didn't say anything about a specific liturgical feast. I only said the service we celeberate is fictitious, because that's what it is.

    I did not intend to say that your melodic reconstructions are right or wrong (I feel not up yet to judge them "beforehand"). I was just irritated that you judged the liturgical feast itself as "fictitious", which would be indeed your judgement of the liturgical source which once seduced you to do all this work of recontruction.

    Without having heard anything you seem to interpret my reconstructions beforehand as real historical artifacts. In this stage I think that's really too much honor. We first have to evaluate things in detail to see in what sense there can be any historical link.

    By the way what do you mean by that? That Mozarabic Chant and its liturgical tradition is a fake?
