Since its inclusion in Ludwig’s Repertorium, and Yvonne Rokseth’s subsequent extensive study and facsimile publication of the manuscript, the Montpellier Codex (Bibliothèque Interuniversitaire, Section Médecine, H.196) has occupied a central place in musicological scholarship on medieval polyphony. The eighth fascicle, in both its physical characteristics and its contents, has prompted diverging interpretations of its relationship to fascicles 1-7, and its place within narratives of the development of thirteenth-century and fourteenth-century polyphonic composition.

This conference – Montpellier 8 – will explore this controversial and little understood collection of pieces in the eighth fascicle. It will contribute to debates concerning manuscript production, dating, and intended audience, offering both musical and textual analyses of specific compositions. Focus on this small selection of works will offer a secure platform for engagement with broader issues, central to understandings of thirteenth- and fourteenth-century music and literature. In just 47 folios, this fascicle encapsulates many of the problematic issues regarding the place and meaning of polyphonic music and its texts in the later Middle Ages.

Professor Mark Everist (Southampton University) will deliver the conference keynote at Montpellier 8, and the programme will feature papers by the world’s leading experts in thirteenth- and fourteenth-century music, literature, art history, and manuscript culture, with confirmed speakers from France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the UK, and the USA.
