Perhaps some may find this article I wrote recently about the earliest hymn melody for the Feast of St. Dominic in the rite of the Order of Preachers interesting:

"Paul Gerhardt's hymn is based on part of a long poem in Latin on the passion of Christ. It is ascribed to Arnulf of Louvain (fl. 1240-48), a Cistercian and Abbot of Villiers in Brabant."

  • Buxtehude give this hymn in "Membra Jesu nostri" (Bux WV 75), ad faciem:

    Salve, caput cruentatum,

    Totum spinis coronatum,

    Conquassatum, vulneratum,

    Arundine verberatum,

    Facie sputis illita.

     …/…

  • Do you know an hymn "Salve caput cruentatum" from 12. or 13. century ?   I read somewhere, some years ago, that this hymn would be the origin of the famous lutheran choral "O Haupt voll Blut", but personally, I did not never found any trace of this hymn ...

  • Thank you!
