Firstly, apologies to those that have already seen this question posted on the Plainsong and Medieval Music Facebook Group.

I recently noticed that the angels in Gentile da Fabriano's Coronation of the Virgin (most likely painted  for his hometown Fabriano around 1420) are holding banderoles of music with the text of St Francis's Exhortatio ad laudem Dei. However, I have not been able to track down a setting of this text to music to compare to what Gentile has painted. I have already noted some similarity between the Mode 1 melody shown in the painting and the hymn for St Francis 'In caelesti collegio novus', although the latter is in Mode 3.

Does anybody know of any discussion of the melody in Gentile's painting or a setting (hymn?) or St Francis's Exhortatio? Thanks in advance for any replies.

A high resolution reproduction of Gentile's panel can be found on the Getty's website here.
