Sources of instrumental ensemble music to 1630

Dear friends:

I am reading the entry of Sources of instrumental ensemble music in the NGDMM by Warwick Edwards. There are many sources with textless such as Magliabecchi 127b or il primo libro de ricercari da cantare, a quattro voci de Claudio Merulo. In reference to the first source, the music contains an incipit with text (in fact, this is the only "lyric" in some pieces). Do you know why there is text in this kind of sources? I can imagine that they play, sing or both. The author asserts that those pieces are instrumental pieces, but why did they write text then?

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Thank you so much.

Best wishes

  • So, the "Sidedero" is the name of the CF, Isn't it?

  • C'est une proposition d'instruments possibles qui peuvent jouer avec ces différentes combinaisons, mais des voix peuvent être aussi chantées. Cordialement.

  • Sure, but different clefs does not imply the mandatory use of instruments... doesn't it?

    Best regards

  • Les combinaisons de clef (cleffing) donnent des indications pour l'utilisation des instruments à cette période.

    Cordialement.SL
