Although the custom in Italy is that the subaltern Orthodoxy adapts to the moveable cycle of the Roman church, I will publish my recordings made on 6 and 7 April, here for Orthodox Easter. This time I was not at the southern periphery of Parco nazionale del Pollino in Calabria, but at the northern one with very high mountains and glacier formations in the province Potenza of the region Basilicata.
Maundy Thursday (6 April 2023) at San Costantino Albanese (Arb. Shën Kostandini i Arbëreshëvet)
A big fire (falò) is prepared in front of the main church San Costantino il Grande at the Piazza del Plebiscito, maioliche in the West façade made in 1845 represent the saints Constantine (main entrance), Peter (left entrance) and Paul (right entrance): On Maundy Thursday a divine liturgy of Saint Basil with 12 Gospel lessons is celebrated. After 6 Gospel lessons, Papàs Giampiero makes a procession while chanting the sticheron Σήμερον κρεμᾶται in echos plagios devteros, afterwards the procession goes out of the church and the Papàs blesses the fire, which had been lit on.
After the celebration of the divine liturgy, the women sing the kalimeret:
