I am leading the Vocal ensemble Gregoriana in Košice (Slovakia). We sing gregorian chant, medieval and renaissance polyphony as well as works of living composers, often somehow connected to gregorian chant.

I think that E is simply the melismatic vocalization for the melody of hemistich. Something quite common…"
