Lingua mea calamus scribae
Directeur d'Études émérite à l'école pratique des hautes études, Marie-Noël Colette contribue depuis plusieurs décennies à renouveler l'étude des répertoires de chant du Moyen Âge occidental, leur reconstitution et leur interprétation. En hommage à leur collègue et ancien professeur, musicologues, chanteurs, liturgistes, historiens de l'art, philologues réunissent dans ce volume les fruits de leurs récents travaux sur la musique et la liturgie édiévale.

The International Medieval Society of Paris (IMS-Paris) is soliciting
abstracts for individual papers and proposals for complete sessions
for its 2010 Symposium, which will explore the practice and function
oftranslatio in medieval France.
The medieval term translatio brings into contact linguistic, material,
and cultural fields. It was attached to a group of related concepts:
the physical displacement of objects, the rewriting of a text in a new
language, or the transfer of meaning proper to metaphor. Eventually,
writers of the Latin West began to employ the concepts of translatio
imperii and translatio studii in an attempt to define their conflicted
relationship with the authority and learning of Classical, Muslim, and
Byzantine cultures; the term thus expressed their understanding of
cultural contact and exchange. Recent work has shown how these
various iterations of translatio can indicate complex acts of cultural
appropriation and re-creation, which renegotiated the opposing forces
of old and new, the other and the self.
The present symposium will bring together scholars from diverse
disciplines, in order to study the various modes and meanings of
translatio. Papers might address such topics as: the adaptation of
texts from one language into another in literary or musical sources;
the transfer of themes from one medium to another (among, for example,
texts, music, painting, sculpture, or textiles); the use of spolia in
building or orfèvrerie; the translation of relics; the exploitation of
Classical themes or narratives by medieval political figures or
historiographers; the controversies over Biblical translation; the
function of translatio as metaphor in religious or secular writing;
the appropriation of words from one language into another.
Papers should address France, Francia, or post-Roman Gaul in some way,
but they need not be exclusively limited to this geographic area.
We encourage submissions from a variety of disciplines, including but
not limited to: Anthropology * Archaeology * Art History * Classical
Studies * Comparative Literature * Gender Studies * History * History
of Medicine * History of Science * Linguistics * Literary Studies *
Musicology * Philosophy * Religious Studies * Theology * Urban Studies *
Abstracts of no more than 300 words for a 20-minute paper should be e-
mailed to contact@ims-paris.org no later than 15 January 2010.
In addition to the abstract, please submit full contact information, a
CV, and a tentative assessment of any audiovisual equipment required
for your presentation.
The deadline for abstract submission is 15 January 2010. The IMS will
review submissions and respond via e-mail by 1 February 2010. Titles
of accepted papers will be made available on the IMS web- site.
Authors of accepted papers will be responsible for their own travel
costs and conference registration fee (35 euros, reduced for
students). The registration fee will be waived for IMS members.
The IMS-Paris is an interdisciplinary and bilingual (French/English)
organization founded to serve as a center for medievalists who
research, work, study, or travel to France.

Au long de l'histoire musicale et religieuse des chrétientés d'Orient et d'Occident, comme du judaïsme et de l'islam, artistes et théologiens se rencontrent sur la problématique du caractère central du chant dans la liturgie. Avec l'appel de Vatican II à ce que les artistes et les fidèles prennent en considération tout le patrimoine musical liturgique, un travail de réhabilitation du répertoire a commencé.

What follows is a resume of my professional activities. A complete C.V. may be found at www.helsen.org.
After having successfully defended my ph.D. thesis ("The Great Responsories of the Divine Office: Aspects of Structure and Transmission" freely available at: http://www.opus-bayern.de/uni-regensburg/frontdoor.php?source_opus=1031&la=de) at the University of Regensburg, supervised by David Hiley, in July 2008, I moved back to my native Canada to begin teaching at the University of Toronto in the Music History and Culture department. I will also be teaching a graduate course in medieval musicology at the University of Western Ontario in the coming semester.
I am a research assistant for several chant research projects, including: the CANTUS Project (http://publish.uwo.ca/~cantus/), the Becket Project (http://becket.ca/), Nota Quadrata (http://www.notaquadrata.ca/), and The Liturgical Veneration of Irish Saints in Medieval Europe (not yet online; please contact Ann Buckley at the University of Maynooth for more information).
My own post-doctoral research will be funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada for the next two years. I am currently working to develop a database of medieval musical manuscripts which can be securely dated within 25 or 30 years between the end of the 11th and the beginning of the 13th centuries. This will help me compare notation types through the very interesting transitional period from neumes to quadratic notation in various geographical locations. I would welcome tips from anyone to help my database grow (it contains about 130 items currently, mostly taken from the indices that Van Dijk, Frere and Samaran have compiled, along with other library catalogues and reference works such as Analecta Hymnica.)

J'enseigne la musicologie médiévale à l'Université de Poitiers depuis 2008 ainsi qu'à l'Ecole pratique des hautes études (Paris, Sorbonne) depuis 2007. Je suis rattachée comme chercheur au Centre d'Etudes supérieures de civilisation médiévale (CESCM) de Poitiers.
Avant de devenir enseignant-chercheur, j'ai été conservateur à la Bibliothèque nationale de France pendant une dizaine d'années.
Je travaille plus particulièrement sur le chant grégorien et sur les premières notations musicales en France et en Italie du Nord (900-1200). Avant de me spécialiser sur le Moyen Âge, j'ai fait une thèse à l'Ecole des chartes sur la musique de la Renaissance sous la direction de François Lesure (La Musique à la cour de François Ier, Paris ; Tours, 2002).
Je prépare actuellement l'édition de ma thèse de doctorat sur un graduel-responsorial-antiphonaire palimpseste originaire de Turin, noté autour
de l'an mil (ms. Grec 2631 de la BnF). Cette source inédite a été redécouverte par Marie-Noël Colette, qui a dirigé mes travaux de thèse.

The Global Chant Database wants to serve as a general search tool for Gregorian chant and other medieval monody. Its purpose is to connect online databases (such as Cantus, LMLO, Cursus project, Cantus planus Regensburg, etc.), printed catalogues and editions (Index of Gregorian Chant, Monumenta Monodica Medii Aevi, Liber Usualis, Graduale Romanum, etc.) and medieval sources. Moreover, every chant should be linked with the scanned documents and audio recordings there are available on internet.
Recently there were made many improvements concerning search possibilities in the database. You can search for melodies, texts, feasts, genres and modes. The database includes now cca 30.000 records of melody and text incipits. The next extensive additions are planned for the next month. In case that you find an error in spelling, you can easily report it using special form. The database is open for external contributors.

En attendant l'établissement d'un site web des Scholastiques Neumatiques, voici une description de l'ensemble vocal féminin que je dirige, sur le Portail de Musiques Médiévales.
Notre existence est également mentionnée sur le site de l'Institut Grégorien du Canada, dont je fais partie en tant que co-directrice, tout comme Jean-Pierre Noiseux d'ailleurs.
Quelques unes des membres des Scholastiques Neumatiques sont présentes sur ce réseau. Il s'agit de Rebecca Bain, Angèle Trudeau et Anne Sophie da Silva. Nous sommes huit au total.
